New D1 Rules: The NCAA just approved a new set of rules that will change the way Division 1 college coaches can recruit athletes during camps and visits in an effort to cut back on early recruiting, or coaches giving scholarship offers to athletes before their junior year of high school. The rules take effect immediately.

Official Visits: Recruits can now start taking official visits starting September 1 of their junior year of high school. In the past, official visits weren't permitted until the athlete's senior year of high school, so this rule is actually bumping them up!

Camps & Clinics: Recruits and college coaches are not allowed to have any recruiting conversations during camps prior to September 1 of the athlete's junior year of high school. Previously, there weren't really any rules that prevented coaches from talking about recruiting to underclassmen during camps. In fact, it had become common practice for college coaches to extend verbal scholarship offers to top recruits during camps.

Unofficial Visits: College athletic departments-this includes college coaches-are not allowed to be involved in a recruit's unofficial visits. Quick refresher: Unofficial visits are any campus visits paid for entirely by the recruit's family. Before the rule change, unofficial visits were an easy way for underclassmen to visit a college camps, meet with the coach and get an early verbal offer. However, if athletes want to take unofficial visits now, they cannot schedule them with the coach-they should treat the unofficial visit just like any other student would. If the recruit happens to bump into the coach on campus, they can't have any recruiting conversations at that time.

Other important information

  • Women’s Volleyball – College coaches have 80 days in which to evaluate you. They cannot exceed that number.

  • College coaches have 80 evaluation days and 20 additional evaluation days (for sand volleyball competition only).

  • College coaches can evaluate and/or contact you no more than 7 times during your senior year.

  • During your senior year a college coach cannot contact you more than 3 times.

@MizzouVB Alum Caitlyn Vann Excelling With DIG it! Program

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Volleyball libero Caitlyn Vann (Muncie, Ind.) has continued to impact the sport she loves well after her playing days inside the Hearnes Center. Vann, a four-year starter for the Tigers from 2007-10, appeared in two NCAA Tournaments, including one of the program's four all-time trips to the Sweet 16.

The talented defensive specialist left her mark on the Tiger record books over her tenure, ranking second in all-time career digs (1,997) and digs per set (4.34). Vann concluded her standout career with a phenomenal 2010 senior campaign, as her 637 digs and 5.35 digs per set re-established Mizzou's all-time single-season record.

Now eight years removed from her time as a student-athlete at the University of Missouri, Vann has played a pivotal role with the up-and-coming DIG it! Volleyball program out of St. Louis, Missouri. DIG it!, an acronym for "Developing the Inner Girl", is a free after-school volleyball program for low-income girls that aims to inspire participants to lead healthy and confident lives.

Currently, DIG it! is currently the only organization in the nation that provides free volleyball instruction and character development training for low-income girls in grades 4th-8th. In partnership with public schools and the Boys & Girls Club, over 150 at-risk girls at 11 St. Louis public schools have been positively influenced by the program.

"This program was originally started by David Bosch, who after working with 4th and 5th graders through Teach for America, realized there was an alarming need for quality after-school programming for inner city girls enrolled in public schools," Vann said. "In 2012, public school districts across the country were forced to eliminate extracurricular sports and after-school programs. DIG it! Volleyball was created as a way to fulfill this need and provide low-income girls an opportunity to participate in a female empowerment program that focuses on physical activity and wellness education."

Vann, the Executive Director for the DIG it! Volleyball Program, focuses on a four-part system with its participants: Volleyball training, healthy living, character development and a school-based model. With hard work and proper implementation, the lives of hundreds of children will be positively impacted for years to come.

"We've found our four-part model to be very effective, because it allows us to make an impact on these young girls long after they've stopped playing volleyball," Vann noted. "In practices they are learning the valuable life lessons that occur naturally by participating on an organized sports team for the first time in their lives, and the wellness and character development sessions give them tools that carry over into the classroom and everyday life."

Overall, the DIG it! Volleyball program has resulted in nearly 85-percent of participants improving their focus on exercise and nutrition, 84-percent increasing their confidence, 98-percent of improving their communication skills and 97-percent improving their mental health.

"These are all areas that are far more important than just learning the sport of volleyball and are exactly why the DIG it! Volleyball four-part model is so important to these kids' development."

Mizzou's Caitlyn Vann Excelling Following Tiger Volleyball Career

Former Tiger currently leading "DIG It!" volleyball youth program

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Volleyball libero Caitlyn Vann has continued a successful career following her playing days in Mid-Missouri. Vann was a three-year starter as the Tigers' libero and took two trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Muncie, Ind., native still holds the Mizzou Volleyball single-season record for digs in a season and ranks fourth all-time in digs in Big 12 history. Vann was also a nine-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honoree and earned 2010 AVCA All-Central Region Honorable Mention recognition.

Currently, Vann has worked with the "DIG It!" Volleyball outreach program which offers free after-school volleyball activities for low-income girls. The program aims to inspire participants to lead a healthy and confident life.

"The program officially kicked off this week and we already have over 120 kids participating in the DIG It program," Vann said. "It has been by far the most exciting and rewarding thing I've done in my volleyball career. We have a lot of support from the community."

The DIG It program will host a tournament on April 16 for a fun day of volleyball action. For more information on the program, contact Caitlyn Vann at Caitlyn@c2volleyball.com.
